Linda Perry Slams Green Day’s Billie Joe Over Producer Firing

Linda Perry Slams Green Day’s Billie Joe Over Producer Firing

WHAT THEY SAID

“Billie Joe’s a little pussy,” * Linda Perry told NME, calling out Green Day’s frontman for ghosting her nearly two decades after she was hired to produce the American Idiot follow-up. Perry says the band stopped returning her calls after fans complained she’d worked with Pink and Christina Aguilera *.

THE DETAILS

  • Perry cleared six months to produce Green Day’s next album after extended talks with Billie Joe Armstrong, planning to record the band live instead of tracking parts separately .
  • Courtney Love blew up the collaboration by announcing it publicly in a 2007 BBC interview before the deal was finalized *. Green Day’s camp denied the report within 24 hours *.
  • After fan backlash hit, the band went silent — no call, no explanation, just six months of lost work for Perry *. Butch Vig ended up producing 21st Century Breakdown in 2009; it debuted at number one and won a Grammy *.
  • Perry believes she was dropped because she’s a woman who’d written pop songs *. She just received the Special International Award at the Ivor Novello Songwriter Awards and is touring with 4 Non Blondes this summer *.

WHO IS RIGHT

Perry’s right. You don’t ghost a producer you hired after extended conversations because your fans got mad — you pick up the phone and explain the situation like a professional. Armstrong let fan opinion override his own creative judgment and couldn’t even make the call himself.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

Green Day has stayed silent on Perry’s comments, and given that this happened nearly 20 years ago, they probably won’t respond now.
