J Mascis gave himself the Rick Rubin treatment without hiring Rick Rubin — he dug out the same 1970s Mesa Boogie MK 1 amp engineer Chris Dixon used on Dinosaur Jr.'s 1985 debut and recorded *There Near* with it *†. The band's 13th album drops August 28 via Jagjaguwar, five years after *Sweep It Into Space*, with lead single "Several Got Away" and a full North American tour running July through November *†. Mascis, Lou Barlow, and Murph tracked the 11-song record over a year at Bisquiteen Studio in Amherst, Massachusetts †.
