THE ANNOUNCEMENT
Maynard James Keenan got a hip replacement on Aug. 26 and is still planning roughly 27 shows in 18 countries with three bands between September and Christmas *. The hip quit on him July 3 in Luxembourg mid-A Perfect Circle tour, and he finished the run on a cane *. Nothing is cancelled ‡.
THE DETAILS
- Surgery happened Aug. 26, 2026 in Los Angeles; Keenan had targeted Sept. 1 as his hard cutoff for recovery time and doctors squeezed him in early *
- Possible diagnoses on the table included a labrum tear, a sprain, and full replacement *
- First scheduled date back is Tool headlining Louder Than Life in Kentucky on Sept. 20 *
- Fall touring spans Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer *, †
- "Canceling isn't an option. People have purchased tickets and booked travel and lodging, most of which is probably nonrefundable." *
- Per Mayo Clinic, full recovery from total hip arthroplasty runs up to about three months — so expect a less mobile frontman early on *
WHY IT MATTERS
BUCKET LIST — a singer walking onto a festival stage roughly three and a half weeks after having his hip rebuilt is not a thing you get to see twice. What's surprising is the reasoning: he stayed on the schedule because fans already bought nonrefundable plane tickets.
