Weezer Joins SRV In Recording Registry Honor

Weezer Joins SRV In Recording Registry Honor

The Library of Congress just gave Weezer’s 1994 self-titled debut — yeah, *The Blue Album* — a spot in the National Recording Registry, right alongside Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble’s 1983 masterpiece *Texas Flood* *. These 25 new additions to the 2026 registry recognize recordings with serious cultural, historical, or aesthetic weight in America’s sonic story, and honestly, both of these albums earned it *. Weezer’s quintuple-platinum debut, produced by the late Ric Ocasek of the Cars, launched anthems like “Buddy Holly,” “Say It Ain’t So,” and “Undone — The Sweater Song” into permanent rotation *. The band celebrated the album’s 30th anniversary back in 2024 with a tour and a box set literally wrapped in a sweater, because of course they did .

SRV’s *Texas Flood* gets the nod for basically revitalizing blues music and blasting Vaughan out of the Austin scene and into the stratosphere *. The album pays tribute to legends like Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Guy, and Howlin’ Wolf, and Vaughan’s tone — achieved with absurdly heavy guitar strings — remains unmistakable decades later *. The registry, which started in 2002 and now holds more than 600 recordings, requires selections to be at least 10 years old and culturally significant to life in the United States *. Green Day’s *Dookie* made it in 2024, and Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” landed in 2023, so Weezer and SRV are in killer company *.

Rounding out the 2026 class are Taylor Swift’s *1989*, Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies,” the Charlie Daniels Band’s “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” the Byrds’ *Turn! Turn! Turn!*, the Go-Go’s *Beauty and the Beat*, and the original Broadway cast recording of *Chicago* *. The registry doesn’t mess around — these aren’t just hits, they’re pieces of the American soundtrack that shaped how we hear ourselves.
