Frank Beard, ZZ Top’s Groove Machine, Dead at 77

THE NEWS

The two-hand shuffle that drove “La Grange” and “Tush” belonged to one guy, and that guy is gone. Frank Beard died Monday, August 17, at 77, in hospice care at his ranch in Richmond, Texas, with family at his side ^*, ^†. He had been ZZ Top’s drummer for 56 years ^*.

THE LEGACY

– Played on all 15 ZZ Top studio albums, from 1971’s *ZZ Top’s First Album* through 2012’s *La Futura* ^‡.

– Recruited Dusty Hill out of American Blues, completing the trio that held together more than five decades ^‡, ^§.

– His kick opens “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” lead single from *Eliminator*, which sold 11 million copies ^*.

– The band’s late-’70s hiatus was partly so Beard could get sober: “I sold my original Ludwig kit to buy drugs with it” ^†.

– Onstage he wore headphones and played to click tracks — the band’s human metronome ^****.

– Gibbons: “There is no other drummer. There’s one guy.” ^‡

WHY IT MATTERS

Billy Gibbons is now the only classic-era member left, and ZZ Top resumes The Big One! tour in Austin on August 22 and 23 ^‡, ^††. Beard was never the beard — he was the pocket everything else sat in.
