Beastie Boys’ Mike D Announces Debut Solo Album ‘Thank You’ With New Single

THE ANNOUNCEMENT
Mike D is releasing his first solo album — *Thank You*, out August 28 via Capitol Records under the name Mike D 5D — and he recorded it at home with his sons Skyler and Davis ^*. It's the first full-length of new music from a Beastie Boys member since *Hot Sauce Committee Part Two* dropped in 2011 ^*. The latest single "True Colors" has him singing instead of rapping over psychedelic rock that feels more Chemical Brothers than Brooklyn hip-hop ^*^†.

WHY IT MATTERS
BUCKET LIST. This is the first time we're hearing what a Beastie Boy sounds like completely untethered from the group's legacy, and Mike D chose to make it a family project that ditches rapping entirely for sung psychedelic funk. Fifteen years is a long time to wait for new music from one of hip-hop's most influential acts, and what we're getting is nothing like what anyone expected.
